Commentaries on Indian parliamentary elections 2014

General elections are likely to be held in April-May 2014 since tenure of the current ruling alliance UPA is ending in May 2014. It is known that Sonia Gandhi refused to hold the post of PM after continual attacks by the opposition of her belonging to a foreign country though she got married to an Indian national. Other reason for her refusal could be traced to lack of majority of her party in the house during first tenure of UPA. She preferred to stay out and make political sacrifice and propose  Dr Manmohan Singh's name for the PM's post. It increased her stature in people's eye consider this move as a sacrifice. However, long term objectives of Gandhi family were to project Mr Rahul Gandhi as a probable candidate for the PM's post in future and fulfill this objective supporting Dr Singh as the PM. Mrs Gandhi could not convince herself to dance to the tunes of politicians like Mulayam Singh Yadav, lalu Yadav and others since Congress did not have majority in the parliament. It was a wise decision on her part. However, some political moves backfired and made roads bumpy in due course during the second regime of UPA.

Series of scams involving some ministers of congress and allies created a wave of incumbancy against the UPA. Inflation increased, growth rate decreased and corruption spread like wild fire. Nobody thought that a movement will emerge against corruption and that too like a storm.Anna's protests and fast unto death for Jan Lokpal Bill supported by India Against Corruption activists, Baba Ramdev's insistence to bring back black money and framing of various cases against political allies made life difficult for ruling alliance.

Intense campaigning by Narendra Modi riding on the success of BJP in Gujarat & other states, AAP's success in Delhi Assembly elections, becoming of Arvind Kejriwals CM in Delhi and later resigning from the CM's post shocked ruling UPA. Now it has to be seen which way Indian politics would go in 2014 elections.

Some political parties believe in playing caste and religion politics, Although Narendra Modi has been exonerated by the investigating agencies, majority of politicians and political parties still consider that irrational criticism of BJP and its leadership may elate them in the eyes of minorities. On the other hand, BJP and its supporting non-political allies believe in garnering support of other sections raising issues like construction of temple etc. There are other political parties searching their support base using reservation and caste factors. As it was not enough, politicians do not hesitate to make false promises like waiving off loans, providing free water and electricity etc.
